Request for Comments Smiths Fork Vegetation Restoration Project Draft EIS Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Evanston-Mountain View Ranger District Uinta County, Wyoming and Summit County, Utah The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is seeking public comment on the draft environmental impact statement for the Smiths Fork Vegetation Restoration Project on the Evanston-Mountain View Ranger District. The project area is located in portions of Uinta County, Wyoming, and Summit County, Utah, approximately 25 miles southwest of Mountain View, Wyoming. The analysis area includes 48,775 acres of Forest Service land, 7,778 acres of private land, and 1,279 acres of State of Wyoming land. Alternative 2 as described in the draft EIS is the preferred alternative. It would treat 4,445 acres of Forest Service land, including sanitation salvage of 1418 acres, salvage clearcut of 1173 acres, sanitation salvage with piling and burning on 76 acres, salvage clearcut with piling and burning on 253 acres, roadside salvage on 1010 acres, and thinning, piling, and burning on 514 acres. No activities would occur in inventoried roadless areas. The proposed action includes approximately 3.1 miles of new specified road construction, 6.3 miles of temporary road construction, 9.6 miles of additional temporary road use on the existing road prism, 5.5 miles of road reconstruction, and 1.4 miles of easements through private land. Pursuant to the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 ("HFRA"), this project is subject to the predecisional administrative review process described in 36 CFR 218. This process provides the opportunity to resolve issues raised in an objection and to identify potential solutions prior to a decision. Only individuals and organizations who have submitted specific written comments related to the proposed action during the opportunities for public comment will be eligible to file an objection. The 45-day comment period on the draft EIS begins with the publication of this legal notice in the Salt Lake Tribune, which is the newspaper of record. Comments must be received or postmarked by the end of the 45-day period. The responsible official will be David Whittekiend, forest supervisor.
